Mining Project
Exploration Site Decommissioning, Remediation and Landfarm Siting and Design
Client: Mineral Exploration Firm
Location: Remote Mineral Exploration Site: Nunavut, Canada
TGCL was retained by a Mineral Exploration Firm to complete environmental engineering work associated with historical documented petroleum hydrocarbon contamination at a closed exploration camp and shop facility located in a remote section of Nunavut. TGCL’s work for this project included a variety of services including the preparation of a detailed comprehensive remedial action plan (RAP) for the site which was approved by the various territorial and federal government regulatory agencies. TGCL’s experience in the assessment and remediation of arctic sites played a vital role in allowing the client to complete treatment of impacted soils on-site as opposed to shipping the material to a facility in the south resulting in a substantial cost savings. Subsequent engineering work involved detailed delineation of impacted soils via the collection of soil samples and the use of Total Station survey techniques to incorporate field and laboratory data into a terrain model to determine the total volume and characterization of petroleum impacts. In addition, TGCL completed site selection and detailed topographical survey work at the camp site to determine an appropriate location for an on-site petroleum hydrocarbon impacted soil treatment facility (land-farm).
